Description
Analog photograph of Bze in Amsterdam
Bze (2004) hand-enhanced (writing) on the edges and MOPE23 for the drawing
Matte archival paper.
Unique sepia print
This hybrid composition merges photography and graphic drawing. A stylized portrait dominates the foreground. Its black, nervous, and minimalist lines evoke contemporary calligraphy. The gaze then moves to the background. An urban scene captures the essence of alternative culture. Marginal silhouettes are discernible in an Amsterdam street.
The work plays on the contrasts of black and white. The grain of the image brings a documentary dimension. The drawing disrupts the photographic reality. This dialogue between the fixed image and the spontaneous gesture recalls the aesthetic of graffiti. The whole explores the margins of society and the freedom of the streets. The handwritten text, which frames the scene, adds a narrative and personal layer. This creation dates from 2004. It is made on paper.
Presentation
Bze has been tagging since he was 12. He writes on his school table, his clothes, the walls and public transport in his environment.
In parallel with university studies in photography and cinema, Bze explored the underground corners of Europe with his film camera, hunting for the aesthetics of the road, the street, the margins and its people. Since 1999, through exhibitions and slideshows between Granada and Rotterdam, he has shared his thousands of slides. In 2006, Bze finalized his photographic journey with a book called Overground, confusing travelers published by Éditions Alternatives. A unique, almost sociological look, revealed by a selection of more than 600 photographs of the counterculture with its communities, demonstrations, squats, free parties...
Following his meeting with the artist Nef, they created the Nef&bze© graphic studio (focused on electronic music).
Returning to his roots, the aesthetics of the letter, Bze devotes himself in the studio to painting on canvas or paper. His contemporary calligraphy, Neo-writer, tends towards minimal abstractionism.
An artistic journey marked by diversity and authenticity, a thirst to share.
