Description

This piece as many other Vladimir's artworks is quite but emotional. The dominant emotional state of the artwork is quiet paralysis mixed with fragile hope. The central figure - the young face is present but unreachable. Hands palms are symbolizing a muted gesture of contact, not resistance. They are not pushing away; they are hesitating. It is about a remaining memory, a thought which is not yet formed. The young man is not oppressed violently but submerged.

The long-bearded figure on the right, holding a small child-like shape close to his face, introduces a deeply intimate and vulnerable emotional tone. It is about care that happens away from the central figure, not toward it. It is about isolation. The overall emotional atmosphere shows that central personage is being alive but slightly disconnected from one's own life.

The most important emotional device here is the surface - the thin horizontal barrier crossing the image like water, glass, or skin. It creates the feeling that the reality is filtered, touch is delayed, perception is distorted. The face is clear enough to recognize but not clear enough to fully meet. And this is not a confusion. It is soft uncertainty, a gentle but persistent emotional blur.

This piece speaks less about power in a direct sense and more about the condition of the human subject inside systems. The figures surrounding the central person feel archetypal rather than individual: a looming figure with a raised arm, elongated shadow-like bodies, small anonymous figures below, a dark tunnel on the bottom. Considering society, all these objects resemble structures of: institutions, traditions, inherited authority, invisible social mechanisms, … and what is important is that none of them are clearly hostile, and this is crucial.

Vladimir is not drawing tyranny. He is drawing normality. The central figure is not tortured. All objects are simply placed inside a world that is: too large, too layered, and too slow to answer back.

So, the modern individual simultaneously asking for recognition and trying to preserve something personal inside a public, mediated world…

There are few metaphors in this artwork:

The central face stands exactly between those two worlds. 

The title is very precise: “Incredibility" here does not mean disbelief in facts. It means that being alive itself has become something difficult to fully trust.

Emotionally, this piece is about: fragile presence, gentle alienation, quiet loneliness, a person surrounded by soft, invisible systems where control is indirect, and meaning is increasingly private and small.

This fits very closely with what you often explore in Vladimir's works - not a spectacle, but the slow erosion of certainty and immediacy.

Vladimir Kolosov is a Canadian painter born in 1962, renowned for his multidisciplinary approach and distinctive neo-surrealist style. Originally from the USSR, he emigrated to Canada in 2006 and currently resides in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. From a young age, Kolosov was immersed in visual arts and music, developing an artistic sensibility that is reflected in his works. His academic background is extensive, including studies in fine arts, music, mathematics, physics, psychology, and business management, giving him a unique perspective on his artistic practice.

His work is characterized by an exploration of inner and outer worlds, using a variety of mediums such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastels . Kolosov is recognized as a skilled colorist, creating compositions where colors play a central role in expressing emotions, contradictions, and contrasts. His paintings, often imbued with symbolism and metaphors, invite the viewer to reflect deeply on themes such as memory, time, identity, and the human condition.

Notable works include "Melancholic Observations of the Echoes from the Past," "Landscape with Levitating Metaphysical Still Life and Its Shadows," and "Hidden Thoughts Are Leaking Out." These pieces illustrate his ability to merge figurative and abstract elements to create enigmatic and evocative scenes. His style is influenced by artistic movements such as surrealism, metaphysical art, and abstract expressionism.

Kolosov has exhibited his work in various countries, including Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, and Switzerland. He has also participated in interdisciplinary projects, such as the VOYZX Exhibition of Contemporary Surrealism in Vancouver in 2019 and 2021, and the international project Colours of My Ice-Dreams in collaboration with Carpigiani Gelato University and the Gelato Museum in Italy.

In addition to his artistic practice, Kolosov is an active art critic and curator. He has published essays on contemporary surrealism in international journals such as VOYZX Art, Surrealismo International (Spain), and Agulha Revista de Cultura (Brazil). His most recent book, “Vladimir Kolosov Through the Looking Glass" (VOYZX Press, 2022), offers an in-depth retrospective of his work.

A member of the AICA/IAAC (International Association of Art Critics) and the Vancouver Queer Art Festival, Kolosov continues to influence the contemporary art scene with his introspective approach and commitment to exploring the complexities of human experience through art.
