Description
Hitchin 1908 St Mary's Church, Map 1850 is a unique mixed media artwork that combines antique cartography, contemporary screen printing and gold leaf. Created on an original 1850 map of Hitchin, the piece features a historic view of St Mary's Church, a landmark that has stood at the heart of the town for centuries.
The antique map forms both the foundation and narrative of the work. Its folds, creases and signs of age are carefully preserved and highlighted with gold leaf, inspired by the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, where repair becomes part of an object's story rather than something to be hidden.
By layering a 1908 view of St Mary's Church onto an 1850 map of the same town, Morris-Winmill creates a dialogue between different moments in Hitchin's history. The interplay between the historic image and the aged cartographic surface invites viewers to reflect on the passage of time, continuity and the enduring character of place.
Rich in texture, craftsmanship and local significance, this artwork celebrates Hitchin's heritage while offering a contemporary interpretation of one of its most iconic landmarks.

Growing up in the outback of Australia, Angela Morris-Winmill learned about the delicate relationship between humans and our natural environment from an early age. When water and food weren’t always a ready commodity, taking only what was needed and leaving zero waste was a lifetime policy which has continued to influence her work to this day since migrating to the UK.
In Angela's latest series she juxtaposes brightly coloured, screen prints of iconic London buildings against a genuine, antique map background to highlight how a city is timeless but ever-changing at the same time.
These prints are hand pulled by the artist and she has also finished them with gold leaf, filling in the wears and tears that come with a lifetime of use to guide the audience's eye towards how beautiful this aspect of a map is.
