Description
Bridge Street is a unique mixed-media artwork that combines Victorian history, antique cartography and contemporary silver ink printmaking.
Created using an original nineteenth-century map of Hitchin dating from 1863, the work celebrates the character of one of the town's most familiar streets. The historic map forms the foundation of the piece, carrying the marks and traces of its own journey through time. Rather than concealing these signs of age, Angela Morris-Winmill carefully highlights and reconnects them with gold leaf, drawing inspiration from the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, which embraces repair as part of an object's story.
Screen printed over the map is a contemporary view of Bridge Street in silver ink, creating a compelling dialogue between the Hitchin of 1863 and the street as it exists today. The juxtaposition of historic cartography and modern imagery invites viewers to consider the layers of history embedded within the places we encounter every day. Gold leaf catches the light across the surface, bringing warmth and luminosity while emphasising the connection between past and present.
Rich in texture, craftsmanship and local significance, this artwork speaks to collectors interested in heritage, architecture, cartography and place-based contemporary art. Presentation
Growing up in the outback of Australia, Angela Morris-Winmill learned about the delicate relationship between humans and our natural environment from an early age. When water and food weren’t always a ready commodity, taking only what was needed and leaving zero waste was a lifetime policy which has continued to influence her work to this day since migrating to the UK.
In Angela's latest series she juxtaposes brightly coloured, screen prints of iconic London buildings against a genuine, antique map background to highlight how a city is timeless but ever-changing at the same time.
These prints are hand pulled by the artist and she has also finished them with gold leaf, filling in the wears and tears that come with a lifetime of use to guide the audience's eye towards how beautiful this aspect of a map is.
