Description
Hermitage Road, Hitchin is a unique mixed-media artwork that combines antique cartography, contemporary screen printing and gold leaf. Created on an original 1970s map of Hitchin, the piece features a view of Hermitage Road, one of the town's most familiar streets, layered over the historic geography of the area.
The antique map forms both the surface and story of the work. Its folds, creases and signs of age are carefully preserved and highlighted with gold leaf, inspired by the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, where repair is celebrated as part of an object's history rather than concealed.
Printed in creamy metallic gold, the image brings warmth and luminosity to the composition, creating a subtle contrast between the contemporary scene and the aged map beneath. By combining a familiar Hitchin streetscape with historic cartography, Morris-Winmill creates a dialogue between past and present, exploring memory, place and the evolving character of the town.
Rich in texture and craftsmanship, this artwork offers a distinctive celebration of Hitchin's heritage and the everyday landmarks that shape its identity.

Presentation
Growing up in the outback of Australia, Angela Morris-Winmill learned about the delicate relationship between humans and our natural environment from an early age. When water and food weren’t always a ready commodity, taking only what was needed and leaving zero waste was a lifetime policy which has continued to influence her work to this day since migrating to the UK.
In Angela's latest series she juxtaposes brightly coloured, screen prints of iconic London buildings against a genuine, antique map background to highlight how a city is timeless but ever-changing at the same time.
These prints are hand pulled by the artist and she has also finished them with gold leaf, filling in the wears and tears that come with a lifetime of use to guide the audience's eye towards how beautiful this aspect of a map is.
