Description
St Mary's Tower, Hitchin 1785, Gold Leaf is a unique mixed-media artwork that combines antique cartography, contemporary screen printing and gold leaf. Created on an original 1785 map, the piece focuses on the distinctive tower of St Mary's Church, one of Hitchin's most recognisable and enduring landmarks. The church tower has stood at the heart of the town for centuries, serving as a constant presence within Hitchin's evolving landscape.
The antique map forms both the surface and story of the work. Its folds, creases and signs of age are carefully repaired and highlighted with gold leaf, inspired by the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, where restoration becomes part of an object's history rather than something to be concealed.
Layering a contemporary image onto an eighteenth-century map of the same place creates a dialogue between past and present. The gold detailing catches the light across the surface, bringing warmth, texture and a sense of continuity to the composition.
Rich in craftsmanship and local significance, this artwork celebrates the enduring character of Hitchin and one of its most iconic architectural features.

Presentation
Growing up in the outback of Australia, Angela Morris-Winmill learned about the delicate relationship between humans and our natural environment from an early age. When water and food weren’t always a ready commodity, taking only what was needed and leaving zero waste was a lifetime policy which has continued to influence her work to this day since migrating to the UK.
In Angela's latest series she juxtaposes brightly coloured, screen prints of iconic London buildings against a genuine, antique map background to highlight how a city is timeless but ever-changing at the same time.
These prints are hand pulled by the artist and she has also finished them with gold leaf, filling in the wears and tears that come with a lifetime of use to guide the audience's eye towards how beautiful this aspect of a map is.
