Description
Horse and Cart is a unique mixed-media artwork that combines antique cartography, contemporary screen printing and copper leaf. Created on an original 1875 map, the work features a historic view of the Horse and Cart, one of Hitchin's most familiar and enduring landmarks, layered onto the geography of the town's past.
The antique map forms both the surface and story of the piece. Its folds and joins are carefully repaired and highlighted with gold leaf, inspired by the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, celebrating the beauty found in age, repair and transformation.
The rich copper leaf adds warmth and depth, complementing the historic character of the scene while creating a striking contrast with the aged map beneath. By bringing together a historic Hitchin view and an original nineteenth-century map, Morris-Winmill creates a layered exploration of place, memory and local heritage.
Rich in texture and craftsmanship, this artwork offers a distinctive celebration of Hitchin's history and the stories embedded within its streets.

Presentation
Growing up in the outback of Australia, Angela Morris-Winmill learned about the delicate relationship between humans and our natural environment from an early age. When water and food weren’t always a ready commodity, taking only what was needed and leaving zero waste was a lifetime policy which has continued to influence her work to this day since migrating to the UK.
In Angela's latest series she juxtaposes brightly coloured, screen prints of iconic London buildings against a genuine, antique map background to highlight how a city is timeless but ever-changing at the same time.
These prints are hand pulled by the artist and she has also finished them with gold leaf, filling in the wears and tears that come with a lifetime of use to guide the audience's eye towards how beautiful this aspect of a map is.
