Description
This experimental piece blends raw instinct with feminist inquiry. The composition centers on a singular, vivid mark. A burst of crimson and ochre breaks the silence of the pale background. Green accents swirl around the core, adding a natural, organic tension. The texture of the surface is deliberately wrinkled. These creases create a tactile landscape that suggests fragility and human skin.
The artist utilizes acrylic and print techniques to explore the boundaries of intimacy. By focusing on the body, the artwork challenges traditional gender roles and patriarchal norms. The approach leans toward art brut, favoring an unrefined and honest expression over polished perfection. There is a daring quality to the execution. It transforms a physical imprint into a symbolic signal of empowerment. The minimalist aesthetic amplifies the emotional weight of the central figure. Each stroke feels urgent and fearless. Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
