Queer Art

Whether led by non-binary artists or LGBTQ+ artists, the fight for sexual liberation continues to fascinate the art world. Figures such as Gilbert & George and Keith Haring have undoubtedly shaped how sexuality and gender are perceived today, particularly within artistic and cultural spheres. One must go back to Ancient Greece to find earlier expressions of a proud, non-heteronormative sexuality.

And yet, the evolution over the past century has been exponential. The influence of LGBTQIA+ activists has profoundly reshaped both audience expectations and the art world itself. While the works of Robert Mapplethorpe may still shock today, the level of controversy is incomparable to the outrage they initially provoked. The same applies to the provocative works of Frida Kahlo, who continuously questioned femininity and masculinity, offering not only a feminist discourse but also a fluid approach to bisexuality.

Painting or photography, sculpture or installation—LGBT artists have radically transformed the art world, and continue to do so today. One only needs to think of Annie Leibovitz and the transformative power of her lens and artistic vision.

Artsper is proud to present this selection of LGBTQ+ artists who continue to challenge notions of gender in art, from David Hockney to Juan Boillo—discover them here.
