Description
The line imposes itself with surgical precision on a black ink background. This composition articulates like a spatial deployment. The linearity drawing guides the eye through a landscape marked by tension. Mechanical silhouettes and geometric shapes intertwine. The radical contrast between black and white emphasizes the urgency of the narrative.
The artist uses ink to engrave a collective memory. Each line tells of confinement and uncertainty. The space fragments into several panels. This structure evokes a silent witness to conflicts. The repetition of motifs suggests an oppressive rhythm.
The figurative style mixes with a political and historical intention. The gesture is sure. It captures human vulnerability at the heart of chaos. Organic details appear on the right, contrasting with the rigidity of the machines. The work explores the themes of displacement and survival.
The support is presented in the form of an ink drawing created in 2025. The composition extends horizontally to embrace the entirety of the subject. The visual rendering relies on a play of deep shadows. Each segment brings a new layer of reading to the visual narrative.
Presentation
Maisara Baroud is a Palestinian artist whose practice explores war, displacement, confinement, and the human experience of living through conflict. Working primarily through painting and drawing, he often depicts figures and environments marked by tension, vulnerability, and uncertainty. His use of black and white creates strong contrasts of light and shadow, allowing gesture, expression, and atmosphere to become central elements of his work.
Born in Gaza in 1976, Baroud received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Al-Najah National University in Nablus in 1998 and later completed a Master of Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts in Zamalek, Cairo, in 2011. He has also worked as an educator at Al-Aqsa University in Gaza, alongside his artistic practice. His experience of living and working in Gaza has informed his engagement with themes of war, displacement, and survival, which appear throughout his work. Baroud has exhibited widely in Palestine and internationally and continues to develop his artistic practice until today from his art studio in Marseille, France.
