A sculpture inspired by Oscar Wilde's quote: “The books the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame."
Oscar Wilde's quote contains a sharp critique of the way society judges art and literature. When Wilde asserts that books considered “immoral" are in fact those that reflect the world's shame, he is pointing out a paradox: it is not the book that corrupts, but the reality that the book dares to reveal.
Throughout history, many works have been censored or rejected because they addressed uncomfortable topics such as social hypocrisy, inequality, sexuality, or moral corruption. However, these works do not invent these problems; they simply make them visible. The discomfort they generate in the reader stems from recognition: upon seeing themselves reflected in those pages, the individual or society feels exposed. Rather than accepting that reality, they choose to label the work as “immoral," thereby shifting the blame.
Wilde suggests that art serves a revelatory function, almost like a mirror. An honest book is not always pleasant, because it forces us to confront what is normally hidden or denied. In this way, the accusation of immorality becomes a collective defense mechanism: it is easier to condemn the representation than to question the reality it depicts.
At its core, the quote also champions artistic freedom. If the books that make us uncomfortable are the ones that reveal profound truths, then their value lies precisely in that: provoking reflection, challenging established norms, and sparking debate. Thus, what some call immorality may, in reality, be a form of lucidity.
