Description
This figure is inspired by B. F. Skinner's quote, "We shouldn't teach the great books; we should teach the love of reading." The quote focuses not on content, but on the reader's attitude and motivation. Skinner suggests that the true goal of education should not be the mechanical transmission of works considered "canonical," but rather the formation of a genuine and lasting connection with reading.
Teaching only the "great books" risks turning reading into an academic obligation, associated with exams, forced analysis, or the fear of "misinterpreting" a text. When this happens, reading loses its dimension of pleasure, curiosity, and discovery. Many students end up rejecting books not because they lack value, but because they were presented as impositions unrelated to their interests and personal experiences.
In contrast, fostering a love of reading involves creating positive experiences around texts: allowing choice, respecting individual tastes, connecting stories to everyday life, and valuing reading as a space of freedom. When a person develops the habit and pleasure of reading, sooner or later they will naturally gravitate towards great books, with a more open, critical, and profound disposition.
From this perspective, great books don't lose their importance, but they cease to be the starting point and become a natural consequence. Those who love to read don't need to be forced to confront classic works: they will seek them out because they want to understand, enjoy, and expand their world. Thus, Skinner invites us to rethink literary education as a process of cultivating desire, rather than accumulating titles, understanding that a love of reading is a far more powerful and lasting tool than any list of required reading.
