Reader LXXXIX, 2026

Jose Manuel Solares

This figure is inspired by Bell hooks' quote, "Life-changing ideas always come through books," which underscores the fundamental role of reading as a path to personal and social change. For hooks, books are not mere repositories of information, but spaces where ideas are born that can challenge the status quo, expand consciousness, and pave the way for freer and more just ways of life.

Through books, people come into contact with thoughts that challenge their previous beliefs and allow them to name experiences that once seemed isolated or confusing. Reading offers a language for understanding oppression, love, identity, power, and resistance. In this process, the reader not only acquires knowledge but also transforms how they see themselves and interpret the world around them.

Furthermore, books connect individuals with other voices, other eras, and other struggles. This connection breaks down intellectual and emotional isolation, showing that personal questions are part of broader collective debates. This realization is profoundly political: reading can become an act of emancipation, especially for those who have been historically marginalized.

This assertion doesn't imply that all transformation occurs solely through reading, but rather that books act as catalysts for change. Ideas are born within them, ideas that then translate into action, dialogue, and commitment. Thus, hooks champions reading as a vital practice, capable of sowing the seeds of a more conscious, critical, and transformative life.
