Jongkie Lee

Born in: 1956

South Korea

Jongkie Lee is a Korean painter born in 1956, known for his pop art works. He studied painting at the University of Honjik, Seoul, from which he graduated with a masters degree.

In his work, he nourrishes from pop culture references, such as Superman or the Simpsons. He plays with contrasts and paradoxes, combining the contraitities of humanity and nature, spirituality and materiality, as well as the East and the West through the representation of figures from the Western culture - characters from American cartoons- and the architectural landscapes of traditional oriental palaces.

Color is omnipresent and the compositions are purified, to give place to his characters. From this perspective free of all sort of visual diversion, Superman, hovers freely in the air, implying by his presence that the world beneath him is safe and at peace, and the members of the Simpsons family, who play a main role in his works, play the role of guides, they lead the viewer to discover another time and other places making reference to the daily life observed by the artist.

The artist has participated in more than twenty solo and group exhibitions, as well as in contemporary art fairs organized in Seoul. His work has been the object of four prizes, including the Grand Art Exhibition of Korea in 2010.
