  • About the artwork

Humanity and its individual and social problems are at the heart of Georges Pacheco's work, which examines in depth the human condition, through its singular approach of photography and the "unique self-portrait of the other".

For his photographic series Amalthea, whose title is derived from the name of the goat who suckled child Zeus in Greek mythology, he photographed in the intimate setting of his studio, mothers with different personalities and physical breastfeeding their child. It is a photographic tribute to this universal act of breastfeeding, while borrowing references to the painting of the Italian or Dutch renaissance. Reference, also made, to the sensuality that governs most religious paintings since the Middle Ages, these having often been close to profane subjects by the introduction of suggestive poses and the use of nudes.

By revisiting this icon of the nursing virgin, which was a central and recurrent theme of painting from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, to the point of having marked our collective unconscious, Georges Pacheco tries to question the processes of representation and incarnation of 'Such an archetypal image by real mothers of today, to whom he asks to be in a 'off-ones' while fully living an intimate moment with their child.

One of the aims of this work is to reveal the universality of this gesture by suggesting a feeling of timelessness: by removing all trace of contemporaneity, by ridding every mother of everything that would make it possible to identify a time and a place. It focuses solely on the mother-child relationship and on the beauty and emotion that comes from this moment of breastfeeding.

He uses simple veils and drapes, to evoke the idea of the timeless and to erase the identity differences of these women. As singular spectator of this symbiotic scene, the artist gazes, fixes and extracts the moments of stealth states of grace, where the outline of a "time out" and the sensation of a pictorial already seen are revealed.

Far from wanting to plagiarize a representation of a suckling virgin according to a specific model, he seeks to understand how certain introspective identification mechanisms operate, in the case of assimilation of images as simple and powerful as those of Madonnas of Christian iconography.

Georges Pacheco

Born in: 1964

Georges Pacheco is an artist born in 1964 in Portugal, he lives between Le Mans and Arles in France. He graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d'Arles (ENSP) with honors and obtained an M.Phil in Art Psychology and a masters in experimental psychology of perception at Paris X University.

Human and his individual, social problems are Pacheco's favorite themes for his photos. With his
« l’autoportrait unique de l’autre » approach, he tries to create an identity portrait according to the psychological model, which tries to capture certain meaningful fundamentals of the subject. He models it and finds himself face to face with himself, making a self-portrait of himself, therefore avoiding the mediation of the photographer.

The questions of representing oneself, the link between photography and his subject, and the photography act are at the heart of Georges Pacheco's research. Through his travels, he tries to confront different types of everyday life and is fascinated by humans.

His work has been exhibited in several places, such as the Galerie du Château d'Eau in Toulouse, Portuguese photography center in Porto, Centre d’art contemporain Stimultania in Strasbourg and Galerie Immix in Paris. He received many awards especially: Le Prix de l’Atelier Voies Off 2007 in Arles, le Prix Jeunes Talents SFR/Arles 2010, le Prix de la Photographie Paris PX3. He was also part of the 16 finalists for the Prix Photographie de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts en 2009.
