  • About the artwork

Lithograph 2 colors printed with Marinoni press lithographic and hand cut.
White Paper BFK Rives 270 g.
Signed and numbered by the artist.

Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, has said “Romero, you (your art) are in the business of transforming people to smile...”. This lithograph certainly invites the viewer to smile, invoking that tranquil and childlike sense of wonder that never ceases to enchant all ages.

Inspired to bring peace and love to our world through his art, Romero Britto depicts an iconic and historic animal in a calming palette of 3 colors, drawing the eye to his bold lines and incomparable exploration of shape and detail. The contrast between such a majestic, peaceful and powerful being in his delicate pink color creates a captivating contrast.

The Artist’s signature details the trunk, and the crown floats gracefully above the elephant’s head – not an attached given, but clearly in its rightful spot. The viewer is invited to think about their relationship with other creatures on this planet, and how we can visualize everything painted in a soft, new palette. The lens through which we view that around us often changes the way we interact with our world – peace and love, the Artist’s inspiration, is a beautifully inspiring perspective to have the opportunity to view.

Romero Britto

Born in: 1963

Brazil

Romero Britto was born in 1963 in Recife, Brazil and today he lives and works in Miami today. He comes from a modest family who had nine children. However, his innate creativity allowed Britto to fill his life with images of a bigger and more beautiful world beyond his own. Self-taught at an early age, he painted what he saw and what he imagined on surfaces such as newspapers, cardboard or any scraps that he could find.

In 1983, Britto traveled to Paris where he was introduced to the works of Matisse and Picasso. After exhibiting in a few galleries and private shows, Britto was encouraged to travel to the United States where Pop Art was flourishing. Britto moved to Miami and set up a studio open to the public. With an unshakable resolve and belief in his art, Britto spent the next few years exhibiting and attracting the attention of many. In 1988, he was selected alongside Andy Warhol and Keith Haring for Absolut Vodka's "Absolut Art" campaign. He combined influences from cubism with pop to create an iconic style that The New York Times described "exudes warmth, optimism and love".

His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in over 100 countries, including the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts exhibition at the Carrousel du Louvre in 2008 and 2010. As well, in December 2013, Maria Elena and Carlos Slim Domit invited Britto to be the first living artist to exhibit at Museo Soumaya.

Romero Britto is an artistic activist for charitable organizations worldwide and most of all an artist who believes "art is too important not to share". A firm believer in the role of an artist as an agent of positive change, Romero Britto is committed to developing and supporting the powerful role art plays in world issues.
