David Delruelle

Born in: 1988 Belgium

David Delruelle lives in Brussels, Belgium, where he was born in 1988. He works with collage, words and photography.

Delruelle started working with collage in 2012 after graduating in Illustration & Graphic design at EPS Saint-Luc. Initially creating handmade paper collages, with time he switched to digital ones, and has refined his practice from a surreal pop imagery to more conceptual researches, using a minimal methodology. He searches in markets and second-hand bookstores for old books or magazines, selected images of which he then assembles, deconstructs or recomposes.

Much of his work explores how we interact with images, both in the way that we view them and what they say about us. His collages create dialogue between pictures and the ideas they represent, and being displaced from their 'original purpose', these images can be repurposed and relocated to create a provocative and engaging discourse, often tinged with humour or irony.

"Delruelle's work reveals through visual contrasts or juxtapositions the primal states of man and his inner feelings. Inspired by everyday news and stories or his own memories, he's questioning the nature of each image, attaching a new meaning in an endless chain of possibilities, highlighting the connection with the other, which actually becomes a reflection of the self." (Andrea Cazan)
