  • About the artwork

The sculptor Dieudonné Fokou retrieves old materials (motherboards, processors ...) sent en masse to Africa. From these apparent waste, it literally gives them life. Thus are born hybrid creatures and metal masks from whence blows the spirit of the ancestors. These sculptures are an act of resistance against the abandonment of traditions by youth, and the loss of its African identity enslaved by Westernization.

His works are periodically visible in exhibitions in Africa, Europe and the United States.
He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Cameroon (Doual'art, Hilton, Foumban Institute of Fine Arts) and abroad Cape Town Art Fair-South Africa; Gallery Maxanart Biarritz; Gängeviertel Hamburg, Hamburg-Germany; Egypt (CAN 2006). He works on topics as diverse as peace, justice or human identity.

His experiments in sculptures of recovery have given series such as Goodbye wars, The poetry of the metal, The digital destiny.

Cameroon

Translation in progress

Dieudonné Fokou was born in 1971 in Bamendjou, Cameroon. He lives and works in Yaoundé. Its workshop is located on the rock of Messassi.

Sculptor, painter, serigraphist, he was trained by two masters in Cameroonian visual arts: Jean Kouam Tawadje and Joseph Francis Sumégné, winners of several arts competitions in Cameroon (2006: 2nd prize of the international competition of the ICCPPC; 2005: 1st prize of sculpture in the 18th art contest of the CPS of Mbalmayo).

He works on topics as diverse as peace, justice or human identity.
His experiments in sculptures of recovery have given series such as Goodbye wars, The poetry of the metal, The digital destiny. Anxious to meet and share, he participated in the projects of theatrical, cinematographic or animation creations. His works are periodically visible in exhibitions in Africa, the United States as well as in Europe.

In some formations he teaches in Cameroonian and German schools with a hybrid methodology based on his professional experience as well as on the approaches of creations observed in other artists.

He participated in numerous exhibitions in Cameroon (Doual'art, Hilton, Foumban Institute of Fine Arts ...) and abroad Cape Town Art Fair-South Africa; Gallery Maxanart Biarritz; Gängeviertel Hamburg, Hamburg-Germany; Egypt (CAN 2006).

Dieudonné Fokou draws his aspiration in the human condition, his encounters, his experience. It then literally gives a new life to the recovery materials (plastic, electronic charts, iron, copper) that are supposed to die.
