Abstraction gestuelle
L'expression « abstraction gestuelle » fait référence à une façon de faire de l'art - non pas ce qui est peint, mais la façon dont c'est peint. En abandonnant l'application de la peinture sur une surface de manière contrôlée et préméditée, les peintres gestuels appliquent la peinture de manière intuitive, physique, en la faisant couler, en l'éclaboussant, en la versant, en l'étalant ou en la jetant directement sur la surface. Ce qui importe aux peintres de l'abstraction gestuelle n'est donc pas la peinture, mais la physicalité, l'honnêteté, l'intuition et une profonde expression personnelle. Cela conduit l'artiste à ne plus se concentrer sur le sujet, mais à se tourner vers l'intérieur pour trouver l'inspiration. Ainsi, l'acte de peindre lui-même devient le sujet ! Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner et Franz Kline ont été à la tête de ce mouvement à partir des années 1940. Mais c'est peut-être Jackson Pollock qui a le plus impressionné avec ses boîtes de peinture percées dégoulinant sur la surface de son œuvre « Number 1A, 1948 ». Les peintres gestuels abstraits explorent leurs émotions les plus profondes et ils expriment cette partie d'eux-mêmes à travers l'acte physique de peindre. Pollock fera remarquer plus tard qu'il ne craignait pas d'apporter des modifications à une peinture, car, disait-il, l'œuvre a une vie propre. La peinture elle-même est une relique de l'action, elle est un enregistrement des gestes effectués. Caroline Vis et Sébastien Desnos (s3b desnos), influencés par les pionniers du genre, font tous deux référence à Pollock dans leur travail, en écho à l'expression de l'émotion.
