Inspired by Franz Kline

Receiving a classical education, Kline studied painting at the Philadelphia School, guided by the work of the Dutch artist Harmenszoon van Rijn Rembrandt and the French painter Edouard Manet. The influence of his training can be seen in Kline's earlier works that demonstrate a highly figurative painting style of landscapes and portraits alike. Later on in his career, Kline set up his workshop in New York where he would be surrounded by like-minded peers in the vibrant city. Alongside other action painters like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Robert Motherwell, as well as other creatives such as local poets, dancers, and musicians, Kline established an informal group known as the New York School in his hayday.
