Description
This atmospheric surreal artwork invites the viewer into a dreamlike world where memory, solitude, and imagination quietly drift together on water illuminated by reflections of an upside-down city. Painted in oil on paper, the composition centers around a faceless seated female figure resting on a soft floating platform surrounded by deep blue water and glowing inverted houses whose windows cast warm reflections across the surface. The result feels like a memory that refuses to explain itself — beautifully confusing, emotionally familiar, and slightly suspicious in the best surrealist tradition.
The faceless figure becomes a universal emotional symbol rather than a portrait. Her sculptural hairstyle twists upward like flowing thoughts or tangled memories, adding movement and psychological depth to the composition. The inverted architecture behind her creates a feeling of emotional disorientation, nostalgia, and fragile balance between reality and imagination. Warm glowing windows contrast against cool blue and turquoise water, creating an atmosphere that feels intimate, cinematic, and quietly melancholic.
Executed in rich oil textures and luminous layered color, this contemporary surreal figurative artwork combines fantasy with emotional storytelling. The composition explores themes of identity, inner worlds, memory distortion, femininity, solitude, and emotional reflection. The water functions almost like subconscious space — calm on the surface, but clearly hiding entire conversations underneath.
Perfect for collectors searching for surreal feminine artwork, dreamlike contemporary figurative art, symbolic female portraiture, fantasy-inspired wall decor, emotional surrealism, or contemporary narrative paintings. This artwork integrates beautifully into modern interiors, creative spaces, bedrooms, boutique hotels, reading corners, and collector homes seeking poetic visual atmosphere and emotional depth.
Its elegant palette and symbolic imagery make it an exceptional gift for dreamers, writers, creatives, psychology lovers, surreal art collectors, and people who occasionally stare out of windows pretending they're in an arthouse film.
Professionally created in oil on paper. The artwork can be framed with or without passe-partout and is shipped rolled in a tube for secure transit.
Presentation
Yana Dmitrieva is a contemporary artist whose work explores emotions, fear, and the inner struggle for self-identification and expression. Born in Barnaul, Russia, in 1981, she currently lives and works in Herceg Novi, Montenegro.
A graduate of the Novoaltaysk State Art School and the Altai State Institute of Culture, Yana began her creative career in furniture and interior design. Over time, her focus shifted toward fine art, which became a deeply personal tool for reflection and emotional exploration.
Her move to Europe in 2022 marked a transformative chapter in her life. Personal and global upheavals became catalysts for artistic evolution, with her practice centering on the tension between external circumstances and internal conflict.
Yana works across various media and techniques. Her drawings in colored pencil and ink allow for introspection and fine detail, offering a meditative process well-suited to exploring complex ideas. She also paints in oil on canvas, drawn to the material’s richness and durability for expressing intense visual narratives.
Currently, she is developing a new series that delves into the complex relationship between the self and its inner contradictions. Her art functions as a visual diary—intuitive, emotionally charged, and grounded in lived experience.
In 2023 and 2024, Yana participated in two group exhibitions focused on urban-themed art at the Museum of Herceg Novi. She is now preparing for her first solo exhibition, where she will present her deeply personal and thought-provoking works.
