Two Creatures, 2026

Juliane Hundertmark

This oil painting presents a surreal encounter between two hybrid beings. The composition vibrates with a raw, expressionist energy. To the left, a slender figure emerges with an elongated neck and a mask-like face. Its pale skin contrasts with the dark, hollow voids of its eyes. Beside it stands a denser creature, blending canine features with human elements. A single, realistic human hand reaches out, bridging the gap between the two figures.
The Berlin-based artist employs animal mimicry to explore the complexities of human behavior. This artwork functions as a psychoanalytical study, stripping away social formalities to reveal instinctive truths. The style draws inspiration from the satirical tradition of George Grosz, yet maintains a contemporary, personal touch.
The neutral background pushes the distorted forms forward, emphasizing their tactile, almost visceral quality. Rough brushstrokes and muted tones create a sense of vulnerability and strangeness. Through this fantastic lens, the scene transforms a simple interaction into a poignant commentary on social conditions. The figures stand frozen in a moment of silent communication, defined by an unsettling yet captivating anatomy.
