Marc Chagall: Lithographs

Marc Chagall was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His style never aligned with just one singular movement and developed over time, and we can see personal elements within his art, such as his Jewish heritage and childhood growing up in Russia. His artwork, which consisted of painting and printmaking, was given a new lease of life in 1950 after he met Atelier Mourlot director Fernand Mourlot and master lithograph printer Charles Sorlier, who introduced him to the technique.

Although Chagall had been creating prints from 1922, it was specifically in the period of 1950-1985 that the artist began to experiment with the technique and push the medium forward. The technique of lithography allowed the artist to create art with unique and luminous hues, which only added to the mystical and dream-like compositions he had already been creating. Over his career it is thought the artist produced over 1000 prints, which consisted mainly of lithographs and etchings and includes some of his greatest masterpieces such as Dauphins and Chloe in 1961. Due to his extraordinary accomplishments in the medium, Chagall is recognized as the foremost color lithographer of the 20th century, and his prints are sought after by art collectors and museums all over the world.
