In "By Bike," Ukrainian artist Viktor Konotopsky reinterprets the energy of Lyubov Popova's Futurist-Cubist aesthetic through the dynamic motion of a cyclist. Angular lines and fragmented planes emphasize movement, speed, and modern life in flux. The cyclist, hunched forward with determination, becomes part of a rhythmic urban environment—blending with the machinery and typography that frame him. Russian text and industrial motifs—such as gears, factory smoke, and posters—immerse the viewer in a mechanized world, capturing the spirit of early Soviet Constructivism. The use of bold letters and visual noise mimics the chaos of the street, reinforcing the theme of man as a cog within the industrial city. Konotopsky expresses the pulse of progress and the tension between individuality and the system. The cyclist becomes both a symbol of freedom and labor, motion and resistance. This painting is a vivid homage to the restless energy of the 20th century, captured through a Cubo-Futurist lens.
Presentation
Viktor Konotopsky was born in 1967 in the village of Maleshkovka, Nedrigailovsky district, Sumy region.
Graduated from the Kharkiv State Art School and the Faculty of Arts of the Saratov State Pedagogical University named after Makarenko.
Worked as a drawing and drafting teacher, and an artist in the advertising field.
In the 90s, he lived and worked in Poland (Krakow and Szczecin) and St. Petersburg.
Viktor had many temptations to catch some fashionable artistic disease, but he remained himself.
Judging his painting by the standards of world artistic fashion is as absurd as declaring love with the memorized words of a popular literary hero. In this sense, it is naive, but the naivety of a professionally educated person. His paintings are realistic, although stylized. The landscapes are easily recognizable, but they contain a generalization leading to an image.
