Blooming Will, 2025

This contemporary abstract expressionist woman's portrait was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot and forms part of her ongoing series dedicated to women. In this body of work, Mougenot explores the resilience, vulnerability, and transformative strength of the feminine spirit. Each painting becomes both a tribute and an inquiry, asking how women navigate adversity while carrying within them the power to bloom.

Blooming Will is marked by its fiery palette of reds, oranges, and earthy greens contrasted with deep swirling blues. For Mougenot, color is never decorative but essential: “These bold colors are my way of expressing my ideas and visions. They emphasize the intensity of emotions I put into the subject I depict." The face that emerges is not a literal likeness but an emotional portrait, charged with honesty and presence.

Her approach to painting rejects rigid academic structures. As she explains: “I am about only authenticity and honesty in what I depict. People feel what is wrong or what is true." In this way, Mougenot aligns with the spirit of expressionism and fauvism while forging a unique style that combines multiple traditions: the emotional distortion of German Expressionism, the liberated color of the Fauves, and the raw spontaneity of contemporary abstraction. The result is a visual language that is entirely her own, one that privileges truth over perfection and feeling over formality.

More than a portrait, Blooming Will is an ode: “This painting is an ode to all women who are resilient, bold, courageous, and have that will and force to bloom and struggle whatever happens in their life." The work stands as a universal symbol of endurance and inner fire, transforming the canvas into both a battlefield of struggle and a garden of strength.

Natalya Mougenot, born in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, in 1981, has lived in Lyon, France, since 2003. Raised in a multicultural environment during the Soviet era, her diverse background deeply influences her artistic identity. What began as a therapeutic practice has grown into a rich exploration of themes such as modern femininity, resilience, and personal empowerment. Her emotionally resonant works—blending abstraction, nature, and floral elements—have found homes in private collections across the globe.

In addition to painting, Natalya is also a passionate photographer. Whether with a brush or a camera, she seeks to capture the world around her—the simple, often overlooked moments of daily life. Her aim is to reveal the quiet beauty of our existence and to remind us to cherish every instant. For her, both painting and photography are acts of presence, of honoring the fleeting and fragile essence of life.
