Description
“Summer Pulse" is a contemporary expressive abstract landscape painting in acrylic on canvas by French artist Natalya Mougenot, measuring 80 × 80 × 1.5 cm (31.5 × 31.5 × 0.6 in), transforming the intensity of a summer landscape into a vibrant exploration of colour, movement and emotional energy.
For Natalya Mougenot, painting is not simply an act of representing what she sees. It is a way of translating what she feels. Nature has been a recurring source of inspiration throughout her practice because of its ability to evoke sensations that are immediate, physical and deeply personal: the warmth of summer, the abundance of colour, the rhythm of vegetation, the feeling of being completely present within a landscape.
In Summer Pulse, the external landscape becomes a starting point for something more internal. Rather than documenting a specific place, Mougenot captures the emotional pulse of summer — its exuberance, warmth, freedom and sense of vitality. The work invites the viewer to experience nature through sensation rather than through literal representation.
This approach is central to Mougenot's artistic language. Her practice moves fluidly between expressive figuration and abstraction, allowing recognisable elements to emerge and dissolve within energetic fields of colour. She is less interested in reproducing reality than in revealing the emotional truth she discovers within it.
Her distinctive style is characterised by bold colour, visible brushwork, spontaneous gestures and simplified forms. Colour is not used merely to describe nature; it becomes an emotional instrument. Greens can suggest vitality, blues create depth and breath, while reds, oranges, pinks and yellows introduce warmth, intensity and movement. The visible physicality of the paint keeps the work connected to the artist's gesture, making the process itself part of the final image.
There is also a strong sense of freedom in Mougenot's relationship with the canvas. She allows the painting to evolve through instinct, balancing structure with spontaneity. This creates a space between the observed world and the imagined one — a characteristic that gives her work its contemporary, emotionally driven quality.
For Mougenot, this is ultimately why she paints: not simply to create an attractive image, but to preserve an experience and transform it into something another person can feel. The landscape becomes a vessel for memory, emotion and connection, allowing a private sensation to become a shared visual experience.
Summer Pulse may particularly appeal to collectors drawn to contemporary abstract and expressive landscape painting, vibrant colour, gestural mark-making and artworks that communicate emotion without relying on literal representation. It can bring an energetic, optimistic presence to an interior while retaining enough ambiguity to invite repeated viewing.
The painting asks a simple but powerful question: what if we could paint not the landscape itself, but the way summer makes us feel?
Presentation
Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
