Artwork location: Ukraine

It Was a Cold Winter (2026) by Zakhar Shevchuk is a large-scale painting that combines visual irony with a subtle reflection on adaptation and resilience. At the center of the composition stands a horse – one of the recurring symbolic figures in the artist's recent work – presented in an unexpected way: dressed in a voluminous winter jacket. The contrast between the natural presence of the animal and the distinctly human garment creates an immediate tension, both humorous and slightly disorienting.

The work operates on multiple levels. At first glance, it feels playful, almost light in tone. Yet this simplicity quickly opens into a more layered reading. The horse becomes a quiet metaphor for navigating altered conditions – adapting without fully belonging to the new environment. The jacket suggests protection, but also intervention, raising questions about where necessity ends and distortion begins. This balance between irony and underlying tension is characteristic of Shevchuk's practice, where figurative images often function as entry points into broader, more abstract reflections.

The material aspect of the painting adds another layer of meaning. It was created during a period of winter blackouts in Ukraine, caused by ongoing war and attacks on energy infrastructure. Working in low temperatures, the artist encountered moments when the paint behaved unpredictably, occasionally dripping before fully setting. Rather than correcting these effects, he allowed them to remain, integrating them into the visual language of the work. The surface therefore carries subtle traces of its own making.

At the same time, the work does not position itself as dramatic or heavy. On the contrary, its strength lies in the restrained, almost understated way it approaches its subject. Even within these conditions, Shevchuk continues his practice in Kyiv, maintaining both his studio work and teaching. This continuity appears here not as a statement, but as a natural extension of his approach – where observation, irony, and discipline coexist.

Presentation

“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk

Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.

With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
