Description
This artwork is a striking portrait that captures the viewer's attention with its bold use of color and abstract style. The subject's face emerges from a vibrant blend of reds, pinks, and oranges, set against a contrasting deep green background. The artist employs loose, expressive brushstrokes to convey emotion and depth, avoiding detailed realism in favor of an evocative, almost haunting finish. The facial features are partially obscured, suggesting an ethereal quality that invites contemplation. The interplay of warm and cool tones highlights the contours of the head, adding to the sense of mystery and introspection. This piece's unique approach lies in its ability to convey raw emotion through abstraction, leaving the viewer to interpret the narrative behind the eyes. It's a captivating exploration of identity and emotion.
Presentation
Guy Ghazanchyan is a contemporary Armenian painter and sculptor, born in 1991 in Yerevan into a family of renowned artists. The son of painters Gagik Ghazanchyan and Lilit Soghomonyan, and grandson of sculptor Nona Gabrielyan, he was immersed in a rich and stimulating artistic universe from a very young age.
He studied painting at the Armenian State Academy of Fine Arts from 2007 to 2013, graduating with the highest distinction, the Eduard Isabekyan Prize, for his work I Know Where It's Flying. In 2012, he was selected for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, an experience that marked a turning point in his artistic career.
Ghazanchyan's work explores profound themes such as freedom, identity, and collective memory, often through expressive portraits and symbolic compositions. His major series include Behind the Walls (2016), awarded the Presidential Youth Award; AKANates (2021), exhibited at the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art; and IUVENIS (2022), which celebrates contemporary Armenian youth.
His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including in Washington DC (Traveling Without Moving, 2017), Rome (Subconscious is Freedom, 2025), Zurich, Naples, Groningen, Beirut, and Los Angeles. In 2019, he became a member of the Artists' Union of Armenia.
