Description
The Monument is a geometric composition inspired by the Waka memorial statues of the Konso people of southern Ethiopia. These carved wooden figures commemorate respected members of the community and symbolize memory, ancestry, and cultural identity.
Created using my distinctive paper peel (cut-out) and paint technique, the work is made from Balacron paper. The upper layer is carefully peeled away by hand to reveal subtle textures and relief, before being enhanced with layers of acrylic paint. This process creates a sculptural surface that plays with light and shadow while emphasizing the geometric structure of the composition.
By reinterpreting the forms of the Waka statues through a contemporary visual language, the artwork bridges Ethiopian cultural heritage with experimental material techniques. It reflects my ongoing exploration of texture, memory, and transformation, inviting viewers to consider how traditional symbols can be reimagined through innovative artistic processes.
Presentation
Leikun Nahusenay (b. 1982) is a multidisciplinary visual artist who currently resides and works in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
