Reading in the meadow, 2026

Olha Symonenko

This painting is a contemporary figurative composition centered on a young woman reading alone in nature. The human figure is the primary subject of the work, while the surrounding landscape creates an intimate setting for this quiet moment.
At the center of the composition, a young woman sits on a golden blanket in the middle of a green meadow. She wears a white dress and a headscarf and is absorbed in reading an open book. A woven basket and ripe red apples rest beside her. Her relaxed pose and clearly defined silhouette establish the central focus of the painting and convey a sense of peaceful solitude and contemplation.
The painting combines expressive treatment of the human figure with soft, graphic lines and a harmonious natural palette. The white dress is modeled through subtle reflections and delicate blue shadows within the folds of the fabric, creating a sense of volume and emphasizing the three-dimensional presence of the figure. The luminous ochre and golden tones of the blanket contrast with the rich green meadow, while the bright red apples provide vivid accents within the composition.
A distinctive feature of the work is the use of raised, textured spiral and wave-like lines across the green background. These tactile passages add rhythm and movement to the natural setting while contrasting with the smooth, carefully modeled forms of the woman's body and clothing. The slightly elevated perspective allows the figure and surrounding meadow to remain clearly visible as an integrated figurative scene.
The work explores the beauty of the human figure, the intimacy of reading, and the restorative quality of solitude in nature. An ordinary summer moment becomes a quiet image of contemplation, inspiration, and personal freedom.
