Description
This drawing captures the urban effervescence of New York. The perspective guides the eye towards the massive structure of the Manhattan bridge. Sharp and precise lines draw the industrial architecture and the red brick facades.
The line is lively. It reflects the constant movement of passersby in the Dumbo neighborhood. The touches of color are applied sparingly. They punctuate the scene and bring life to the anonymous silhouettes.
The balance between technical drawing and watercolor creates a luminous atmosphere. The white of the paper allows the composition to breathe. The contrast between the verticality of the buildings and the scale of the bridge emphasizes the grandeur of the city.
The whole is presented in a dark frame which highlights the clarity of the paper. This piece offers an architectural and human vision of the American metropolis. Every detail, from the windows of the buildings to the cables of the bridge, is treated with precision.
Presentation
Liao is known for his ability to merge the rigorous and mathematical discipline of architecture with a soft and human emotion. His characteristic style is clearly visible in this work:
extremely fine ink lines that capture with surgical precision the immense complexity of the city and the intense traffic around the Arc de Triomphe. Subtle washes in watercolor lend the work a dreamlike, almost nostalgic atmosphere. The transition between the detailed foreground and the more abstract and light lines of the background creates a remarkable effect of depth. Liao captures the pulse of the city here; from this elevated viewpoint, the chaos of traffic becomes an organized dance, a central theme in his exploration of human patterns.
About the artist:
Miguel Liao, born in Barcelona in 1986, is internationally acclaimed for his multidisciplinary approach. His work is collected by connoisseurs who appreciate the balance between classical drawing techniques and a modern, almost visionary, view of our urban environment. This work in particular is a magnificent example of his early interest in urban structures, before he turned to large-scale digital installations.
