Description
FESTIVAL OF “PINDANG GUNUNG" — AGUS ZIMO
A feast becomes a stage. At its centre, a monumental fish presides over an extraordinary gathering of figures, dishes, plants and animals. Through this imaginative scene, Agus Zimo explores the relationship between culinary heritage, community identity and the presence of political power.
Created in 2026, Festival Of “Pindang Gunung" is a unique mixed-media painting combining acrylic and Aqua Proof on canvas. Its vertical composition unfolds through overlapping encounters: elongated figures stand beside a communal table, small creatures inhabit the foreground, and vividly coloured vegetation connects the gathering to its surrounding landscape.
An earthy palette of taupe, brown and charcoal anchors the painting. Passages of scarlet, pink, turquoise, blue and green introduce energy and contrast. Above the crowded scene, a brightly coloured mountain and a dark tree establish a quieter register, giving the celebration both a setting and a sense of theatrical suspension.
The work originates in the artist's experience of a festival celebrating his regency's traditional culinary culture. For Zimo, the event expressed the identity of a coastal community through its food, ingredients and shared rituals.
The name pindang gunung particularly caught his attention: a mountain reference attached to a dish prepared by coastal people with local spices. This geographical paradox becomes a starting point for a wider reflection on belonging and cultural representation.
The attendance of local officials added a political undercurrent. Without reducing the scene to a single interpretation, Zimo brings celebration and intrigue into the same pictorial space. Food becomes a point of convergence where everyday life, collective pride and public authority meet.

Presentation
Agus Zimo creates paintings that invite curiosity and awaken awareness. Born in Indonesia in 1978, he lives and works in Langkaplancar, Pangandaran, West Java. He studied Fine Arts at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia in Bandung and established Dapur Seni Agus Zimo in 2013.
At the heart of his practice lies a conviction: art gives form to what deserves to be heard. Questions of justice, environmental protection and freedom of expression enter his work through narratives that connect personal experience with collective concerns. He welcomes the unexpected, seeing unconventional imagery as a way to reveal truths that ordinary appearances may conceal.
Working in mixed media on canvas, including acrylic and Aqua Proof, Zimo approaches painting as an open conversation. His subjects encourage viewers to reconsider their relationship with nature, society and one another. In , a celebration of woodland beauty becomes an invitation to preserve the living world upon which we depend.
His exhibition history spans two decades, with solo presentations in Bandung and participation in group exhibitions at venues including Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, Indonesia's National Gallery, ISA Art Gallery and Grey Gallery.
His paintings offer a meeting place for imagination and conviction, where visual pleasure opens toward a deeper engagement with the world.
