Description
This contemporary expressionist, figurative abstract portrait was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot as part of her ongoing series devoted to the human face—not just as a likeness, but as a mirror of the soul. True Self delves into the profound inner landscape of identity, emotion, and being. In Natalya's own words, “This painting is called True Self and refers to any human being—beyond gender or sex. It speaks to that quiet space we enter when we are alone with our thoughts, in a state of contemplation. In that stillness, we meet our truest self."
In this work, Natalya explores the universal nature of the human condition through her signature use of bold, non-naturalistic color and emotionally charged brushwork. “I wanted to explore identity and introspection," she says, “by creating a dialogue between the internal and the external. The vivid hues and abstracted form allow the inner world to surface." Dominated by shades of green and turquoise, her color palette evokes both serenity and depth—each color carefully chosen to amplify the emotional resonance of the subject. “Color is my instrument," she adds, “to translate the intensity of emotion, to make the invisible visible."
True Self is less a portrait of a person and more a portrait of a state of being. The subject becomes an emblem of reflection, stillness, and what Natalya calls "human universality"—a shared emotional language that transcends identity, background, or experience. In this way, her work speaks to the quiet commonality beneath our outward differences. “This piece is about capturing that essence," she reflects, “where every viewer can see a part of themselves within it."
Drawing influence from German Expressionism, Natalya prioritizes emotional truth over physical realism. “In this piece," she says, “I found myself closer to the spirit of German Expressionism—where portraits served not to resemble a face, but to reveal a psyche." Her work also resonates with elements of Art Brut, Art Naïf, and Fauvism—movements that embrace rawness, directness, and a deeply personal visual language. “So many of my portraits carry a kind of introspection," she says, “a melancholy that's not sadness, but depth. They speak not to what we show the world, but to what we hold quietly inside."
At the core of Natalya Mougenot's practice is an unwavering commitment to authenticity. “Authenticity is everything," she affirms. “You cannot lie when you paint. The viewer will always see and feel what is true."
True Self is thus more than a painting—it is an invitation to look inward, to meet oneself beneath the surface, and to recognize in the brushstrokes and color fields a shared human experience.

About the Artist:
Natalya Mougenot, born in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, in 1981, has lived in Lyon, France, since 2003. Raised in a multicultural environment during the Soviet era, her diverse background deeply influences her artistic identity. What began as a therapeutic practice has grown into a rich exploration of themes such as modern femininity, resilience, and personal empowerment. Her emotionally resonant works—blending abstraction, nature, and floral elements—have found homes in private collections across the globe.

Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
