Description
This haunting print explores the raw intimacy of the female form. The artist employs a bold, experimental approach to challenge traditional gender roles. A monochromatic palette creates a somber, reflective atmosphere. The composition emerges from a deep void. It captures a tactile impression of the body through a fusion of acrylic and printing techniques. Light and shadow dance across the surface. They suggest a landscape of skin and memory. The artwork functions as a silent critique of patriarchy and a celebration of empowerment. It transforms a physical trace into a powerful feminist statement. The texture appears organic and weathered. It evokes a sense of vulnerability and strength simultaneously. The central form is blurred and ethereal. It avoids literal representation to favor an emotional resonance. This 2020 piece invites the viewer into a private, fearless space. The visual language is one of subtraction and revelation. It focuses on the essence of the nude through an abstract lens. The image is framed by a stark black border. This containment heightens the intensity of the central gesture.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
