  • About the artwork

    Artwork sold in perfect condition

Inspired by 1/87 scale model figures, Gaspard Mitz created his first Box Story in 2010 to give it to his friend. Self-taught, driven by the enthusiastic reactions to his boxed stories, he has since enjoyed staging 2 cm characters in situations that go beyond them. Jewelery boxes, such as music boxes, cuckoo clocks and the works of artist Joseph Cornell, have always appealed to him. Admiring Japanese aesthetics, he constructs his scenes in sober, uncluttered universes, working with a selection of materials: wood, polystyrene, foam sheets and paper. Gaspard Mitz takes pleasure in diverting figurines from their primary function, by inventing a tailor-made destiny for them. The humor and poetry of the moments that he freezes in his boxes are reinforced by their titles. Box Stories are made in a limited edition of 12 copies and 2 artist's proofs.

Gaspard Mitz

Gaspard Mitz is a Parisian artist born in 1981.

Entirely self taught, Gaspard Mitz discovered his vocation by accident. For a friend's birthday, he decided to design an original gift for her, a three dimensional story that he will place in a case, something between a music box and a sculpture. This is how the concept of the "Box Stories" was born.

With small figures in scale 1/87, Gaspard Mitz imagines scenes where these figures are the protagonist. Artistic references or improbable situations scramble. The artist draws elements from art history, cinema or games to bring to life his miniature heroes. Measuring only two centimeters, these figures revisit large paintings that marked their time. A shrunken reality in which they can surf the waves of Hokusai or answer the call of muses of Roy Lichtenstein.

In small groups, of two or three, the miniatures manage to say a lot. The theater of their adventures is limited to a box, with a sober and refined decoration, resembling Japanese aesthetics. His stories are captured instants that never lack humor or poetry, playing with the knowledge and the reactions of the observers.

Each story box is made by hand, by Gaspart Mitz, in wood, polystyrene or paper. They are made in limited editions, only 6 to 12 pieces. There is a version under the form of dome, of which there is only one exemplary available.
