Description
On the other hand, if I wanted to make an entire figure, I had to respectfully treat each part. Clearly, if I did not want to carve the knees, I did not have to put them on.
I believe that this lesson, twenty years later, was very present in my mind when in 2007 I realized «La Clairière». The right foot complicated the sculpture and brought nothing, but it took me some time for daring to eliminate it. I hesitated, because I was afraid that public could see a displaced amputation that would make the whole thing anecdotal. I hope I have avoided this pitfall by maintaining the integrity of this young person.
The construction of «La Clairière», quite complex, is developed as a staircase. Our eyes are gradually moving from one point to another. It has no center and distributes its receding lines as if, in itself, several luminous points diffused their rays. These lines, if we prolong them, lead all to the void.
I struggled to stabilize its form and find its unity. The limbs were either too long or too short, like the branches where it finds support. The head has been displaced many times, hands have been redone several times. Its face, which had to keep the traces of childhood without stripping itself of its gravity, required long efforts. «La Clairière» is a realization where I had to eliminate doubt after doubt, every detail raising a problem. For a sculptor, simplicity is one of the most complex goals to achieve. But, unlike drawing, sculpture does not keep tracks of repentance. Once finished, nobody can go over the paths that had to be taken to shape it. Some are offered, others are up for grabs.»**

Presentation
Marc Petit, born in Saint-Céré in the Lot region in 1961, is today considered by galleries and the art market to be one of the greatest living contemporary sculptors.
At the age of 14, he tried sculpture and discovered this technique. He comes from a family of artisans, he left high school quickly, and devoted himself to carving stone. But it was through two encounters that his technique and life, took up a whole new meaning. Marc petit came across two sculptors from Beaux-Arts Paris, and they became his mentors. René Fournier and Jean Lorquin. Both of them will give him a sharp eye and thoughts on sculpture.
René Fournier took him towards the art of modeling and provided him with the teachings of Marcel Gimond, a legendary sculptor of the 20th century, known for his creations of busts of political figures or the artistic scene. Jean Lorquin had himself won the Prix de Rome in 1949 and was resident at the Villa Medicis, he provided Petit with a know-how on sculpture and mainly a deep reflexion.
With bronze, terra cotta and plaster, Marc Petit created his first sculptures of human beings. Lonely characters with a gloomy look. They seemed lost, and were dominated by oppressiveness or spite. The body has a tired, disembodied look. One doesn't know if it's a tragedy or a floating moment, like a soul wandering in a limbo. When we are in front of these figures, we put a distance but a voyeuristic one, more confused rather than empathetic.
Marc Petit realized his first personal exhibition at the age of 24 and slowly made his name among galleries and collectors.
