Ex Boyfriends, 2023

Inga Makarova

“Ex Boyfriends" by Inga Makarova is a powerful conceptual artwork that transforms denim into a deeply evocative medium to narrate the complexities of love, relationships, and the traces they leave behind. Constructed from stitched fragments of jeans trousers, coated with enamel, and mounted on canvas, the artwork embodies the emotional wear and tear that love leaves on us, much like the fabric itself. The tactile nature of the piece invites viewers to physically and emotionally engage with the story it tells, making it more than just a visual experience.

The title, “Ex Boyfriends", cleverly plays on the fashion term “boyfriend jeans," while also delving into the emotional remnants of past romantic connections. The worn and stitched denim symbolizes the pieces of intimacy, joy, and heartbreak that remain after a relationship ends. Makarova's glossy enamel overlay acts as a metaphor for how we attempt to polish and present these fragments in our memories—sometimes idealizing, sometimes concealing. Through this juxtaposition of rugged denim and a sleek finish, the artist speaks to the universal experience of love, loss, and personal transformation. The artwork's large scale magnifies its emotional depth, creating a narrative of resilience and the beauty found in imperfection. This piece is a centerpiece for any collection, offering both a striking visual and a profound emotional resonance.
