Lunar mineral, Circa 2021

Maria Ruisi

Acrylic, mineral pigments, 3D sculptural relief, premium resin on professional canvas 50 × 50 cm (canvas) — 51 × 51 × 6 cm (with black USBox floating frame) Unique work.

In “Lunar Mineral", Maria Ruisi reduces her visual language to its most essential form: a single sphere, a single ground, a single opposition of white matter against absolute black. The sphere is built entirely by hand — hundreds of individual mineral-textured relief elements, each shaped and placed over multiple studio sessions, accumulating into a form of extraordinary physical density and quiet power. The surrounding ground is absolute lacquered black, receding into infinite depth behind the sphere, creating the sensation of a celestial body suspended in deep space. The work operates within the tradition of monochromatic minimalism — Malevich, Klein, Reinhardt — while departing from it entirely through its insistence on physical matter, tactile presence and three-dimensional depth. This is not a flat field. It is a landscape of accumulated gesture, visible only at close range. A subtle halo of diffused light surrounds the sphere — an atmospheric effect created by the interaction of the mineral surface and the resin finish — giving the work the quality of a cosmic phenomenon rather than a painted object. This work belongs to Ruisi's ongoing investigation of matter as living presence — surfaces that respond, transform and deepen with every change in light. Maria Ruisi (b. 1983, Riga, Latvia) is the founder and artistic director of Abstract Art Gallery, with studios in Riga and a curatorial presence in Paris.
