About the artwork

Artwork sold in perfect condition

"Using a simple seed as the 'germ' of my idea, 'Dance of Life' was worked from two near-identical blocks of white Naxos Marble which immediately reminded me of twins. The discerning viewer may be able to make out the shape of an egg, spermatozoa and a womb in a fluid form representative of the birthing process. There is a dance between the two opposing shapes of the sculpture. The slow germination of the seeds as they evolve to form their own space and personalities is evocative of the life dance of which we are all a part." (Gyp Mills, 2000) Presented on a solid wooden plinth Title - The Dance of Life Edition - #3/7 Date - 1992 Ships in a solid custom box with tracking.

Sculptors Artists

British artists

Gypsy Dave Mills (1946-2019) was an English sculptor, writer and composer who first came to public attention in the sixties as the travelling companion and road manager of singer-songwriter Donovan, appearing alongside him in the 1966 TV documentary, 'A Boy Called Donovan'. In 1968 he was with the Beatles, Beach Boys, Donovan, Mia Farrow et al in India meditating with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at Rishikesh.

From 1968 to 1971 Mills studied sculpture with personal tuition from renowned British sculptor David Wynne to whom he was introduced by George Harrison while Wynne was working on a commissioned piece of the 'Fab Four'.

In the late 70's Mills began to move away from his music industry roots towards the visual arts. In the years that followed he restored a farm house on the Greek island of Paros where he lived and worked as a sculptor making large "abstract-figurative" works in found marble. His sculptures can be found in private collections across America, Europe and beyond.
