With the rise of Christianity, nude sculpture largely disappeared from artistic production for centuries. Masters like Michelangelo, Bernini, and Benvenuto Cellini created some of the most celebrated sculptures in Western art, often using mythological and biblical subjects as a basis for their anatomical studies. Their works helped establish the artistic standards that dominated Western sculpture until the late 19th century.
The arrival of modern art marked a dramatic shift away from the classical representation of the nude. Sculptors like Auguste Rodin and Alberto Giacometti moved beyond realism, prioritizing expressive and symbolic interpretations of the human figure. Their work broke from traditional neoclassical ideals, paving the way for contemporary sculptors to experiment with new materials, forms, and concepts.
