Stamp-Style Illustrations
The rubber stamp, invented in the mid-19th century, has many uses in day-to-day life. While it was initially used solely for educational purposes, the stamp soon became a popular tool in the art world. A form of printing, the stamp allows for the same image to be produced again and again. Images produced using a stamp tend to be visually striking, usually characterized by a limited color palette and flat forms. There is usually no sense of depth, placing the focus instead on the shapes, composition, and images depicted.
Today, many artists produce works inspired by the stamp. While some use the stamp as their printing method, others pull certain visual elements of this technique as inspiration for works in different mediums. For example, the linocut printing technique is similar to that of the stamp, and produces a similar visual effect, usually on a larger scale. Today, Artsper has curated a selection of contemporary artists producing illustrative works inspired by the stamp. Join us to find artists including Joanne Freeman and Donald Baechler and many more!
