In Underground love, John Black fuses two visual languages — classical floral painting and urban graffiti — to explore the collision of romantic emotion and subcultural expression. At its base lies a dark, sensual painting of purple irises, rendered in oil on canvas with dramatic lighting and painterly finesse. These flowers, traditionally associated with mystery and passion, bloom against a shadowy backdrop, evoking an atmosphere of intimacy and secrecy.
Mounted above the canvas is a chaotic swarm of inscriptions, cut from fluorescent red and pink acrylic sheets in graffiti-inspired typography. Each repetition of the word acts like a shout or a tag — urgent, impulsive, and unapologetically raw. The glossy plastic layer both conceals and reveals the painting beneath, forcing the viewer to peer through visual noise in search of poetic beauty.
