Description
A man stands in a domestic space. He focuses on a pan over a stove. This watercolor painting captures a quiet moment of daily ritual. The artist employs a bold, experimental approach to a common scene. Vibrant yellows clash with deep blues. The colors create a rhythmic tension across the composition. Short, decisive brushstrokes define the figure. The man wears glasses and a casual outfit. A yellow cloth hangs over his shoulder. He holds a wooden spoon with precision. This artwork explores the intimacy of everyday life. It subtly engages with themes of gender roles and domesticity. The perspective is direct and honest. The composition balances the verticality of the figure with the horizontal lines of the kitchen. Light washes over the background in pale tones. The foreground is grounded by the heavy mass of the stove. This 2023 piece blends portraiture with a narrative of routine. Every detail emphasizes a sense of anticipation. The scene concludes with the visual weight of the man's blue shoe against the tiled floor.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
