Description
This conceptual artwork explores the boundaries of intimacy and gender. The composition centers on a soft lilac square. A dark, organic shape emerges from the center. This form is created through a bold body print technique. The texture is raw and visceral. It suggests a human presence without defining it. The artist uses acrylic to capture a fleeting physical impression. This approach challenges traditional views of the female form. It moves beyond mere representation into a space of feminist inquiry. The contrast between the delicate background and the heavy pigment creates a tension. It reflects a dialogue between vulnerability and strength. Every smudge carries a sense of fearlessness. The piece invites the viewer to consider the body as a primary tool for expression. The result is a minimalist yet powerful statement on empowerment. The dark tones bleed into the pale surface. This creates a ghostly, evocative silhouette.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
