Oranges and avocado, 2025

“Oranges and Avocado" is a contemporary still-life painting by French artist Natalya Mougenot, celebrating vibrant fruit, bold colors, and expressive brushwork that transforms everyday objects into visual poetry.

At the center of the composition, two bright oranges rest in a striking blue bowl, accompanied by rich green avocados. “These fruits are not just objects to paint," says Natalya Mougenot, “they are vessels of emotion — their forms and colors radiate vitality, warmth, and joy."

The painting's background is divided into two contrasting planes: a sunlit yellow above brings light, energy, and optimism, while a deep magenta below adds depth, intensity, and a sense of passion. “I am drawn to contrasts in life and color," explains the artist, “they mirror the balance between brightness and richness, simplicity and complexity."

Executed with bold, gestural brushstrokes, “Oranges and Avocado" elevates the traditional still-life genre into a dynamic study of color, form, and texture. Natalya's process is intuitive and emotionally guided: “Each gesture on the canvas is a dialogue with my feelings. I paint what I feel, not what I'm expected to show."

Authenticity is at the heart of her artistic philosophy. “Art must be honest — with the canvas, and with the viewer," she says. “I embrace imperfection, spontaneity, and emotion, because sincerity resonates more deeply than precision ever could." By merging representation with abstraction, this contemporary still life invites viewers to engage with the energy, vibrancy, and emotional resonance of ordinary objects. “I paint to remind myself — and others — that the ordinary can be extraordinary," she adds.

“Oranges and Avocado" is a celebration of the beauty in everyday rituals, encouraging viewers to pause, notice, and reconnect with the small joys that enrich life. Through color, movement, and intuitive expression, the painting transforms fruit into a vibrant reflection of human emotion, presence, and authenticity.
