Contemporary expressive female portrait inspired by Matisse, bold Fauvist color modern art painting celebrating feminine strength, authenticity, and inner transformation.
In Rising Self, French artist Natalya Mougenot enters into a subtle yet powerful dialogue with Henri Matisse. The connection lies not in imitation, but in shared freedom — the conviction that color can reveal what words cannot.
“What moves me in Matisse is his courage," Natalya reflects. “He allowed color to carry emotion without apology. That freedom is timeless." In Rising Self, deep cobalt blues envelop the figure like a protective aura, transforming color into architecture. It frames the face, elevates it, almost sanctifies it. Pink and peach tones vibrate against cool blues, creating tension and harmony at once — a living surface rather than a fixed image.
Natalya embraces modernist simplification: features reduced to their essence, eyes gently closed, a single vertical line defining the nose like an inner axis. “When I simplify a face, I am not removing identity," she says. “I am removing noise. What remains is presence."
The elongated neck becomes central to the theme of rising. Painted in layered rose and intersected by blue contours, it forms a symbolic column — a passage between vulnerability and strength, heart and mind. “Rising is not about becoming someone else," Natalya explains. “It is about aligning with who you already are."
Authenticity stands at the core of her practice. Brushstrokes remain visible, edges intentionally unresolved. The painting breathes through its imperfections. “If a work feels too controlled, it loses its pulse," she notes. “I need to see the hand. I need to feel the moment it was made."
Her approach is spontaneous, intuitive. She does not over-plan compositions. “I begin with an impulse," she says. “The painting tells me where it wants to go. I follow." This immediacy anchors the work in emotional truth rather than calculation.
Natalya often refers to her position within a metamodern sensibility — a space oscillating between sincerity and awareness, structure and freedom. “Metamodernism allows me to believe again," she shares. “To use bold color without irony. To be sincere without being naive." In Rising Self, this oscillation is palpable: modernist echoes meet contemporary introspection; strength coexists with softness.
Within her ongoing series dedicated to women, each figure carries a deeply personal resonance. “Every woman I paint holds something of me," Natalya confides. “My transformations, my resilience, my doubts, my strength. Painting is how I rise too."
The chromatic contrasts mirror the complexity of feminine identity — cool and warm, fluid and structured, introspective yet present. The closed eyes do not suggest withdrawal but clarity. This is a woman grounded in herself, defined from within.
Inspired by the fearless color of Matisse yet rooted in contemporary authenticity, Rising Self becomes more than a portrait. It is a vertical movement rendered in pigment — a quiet ascension toward selfhood. Through spontaneity, sincerity, and bold chromatic language, Natalya Mougenot affirms that true strength in art — and in women — lies in the courage to remain authentic.

Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
