Description
In this work, I continue the deconstruction of the Soviet myth, shifting the dialogue between porcelain and carpet ornamentation into a register of strict graphic form. Here, the classic cobalt-blue 'Fish' set—another iconic marker of comfort from that era—is torn from its habitual environment and placed within the minimalist visual vacuum of a clean white canvas.
The ornamental framing, which directly quotes the instantly recognizable geometry of the period's carpets, now functions as a strict architectural portal. I enclose the mis-en-scène of blue-and-gold figurines within the rigid borders of the carpet patterns, transforming a domestic still life into something akin to a sacred altar or an open book of memory. The contrast of deep cobalt, brilliant gold leaf, and sharp patterns completely strips the objects of their mundane triviality.
This painting is an exploration of how two dominant pieces of mass design, by uniting on the canvas, are cleansed of their everyday context and establish themselves permanently as an untouchable national visual code.
