Description
With "Galactic Romance", Cédric Zokatos invites us to contemplate what we often forget to look at: the creative disorder, the beauty of chaos. Far from being a cold abstraction, this work is a surge, a pulse of life that touches the universal.
Each painting projection, each burst of color seems to emerge from a raw, original force. Zokatos captures something essential here: the way that, from apparent disorder, a form of mysterious order emerges. In this, he speaks as much of the cosmos as of our existences: we move through turmoil, between accidents and collisions, but it is precisely in this chaos that our trajectory, our singularity, is drawn.
The title, deeply evocative, pushes us to think beyond appearances. A "galactic romance" is the improbable meeting of two forces in the immensity of the universe. But is it not also a metaphor for our lives? Our relationships, our loves, are also made of collisions, explosions of emotions, profound reorganizations. What seemed chaotic suddenly takes on meaning, like the trajectories of particles from a big bang that build a new universe.
Zokatos does not propose here a peaceful or fixed vision of the world. On the contrary, he celebrates movement, energy, the unexpected. The dark hues—these dense blacks and grays—remind us of the immensity of the void, the unknown that surrounds us. But the bright bursts of color—yellows, turquoise, magenta—affirm a strong idea: even in the darkness, light always finds a way.
"Galactic Romance" tells us a simple and essential thing: chaos is not a threat, but a promise. The promise that beauty, life, and perhaps, love can be born from turmoil.
Presentation
Inspired by the counterculture of the 90s, Zokatos naturally turned to street as his original ground of expression. He kept the brutality of graffiti, its suggestive strength and a very particular idea of painting. From the wall to the canvas, his work evolved, but he kept using Street Art techniques, mainly markers and the spray paint. His abstract and colorful compositions are in contrast with the grey universe of the Parisian bloc buildings where he grew up. His artwork, already rich and varied for a 29-year-old artist, is an original synthesis mixing street and abstract art, switching easily from spray paint, watercolor or paint to sculpture. The softness of his non figurative aesthetics made of forms and lively colors is in contrast with the spontaneity of his artistic gestures. We think then of an allegory of the dilemma of the urban artist with this constant tension between the street and the gallery space, and the canvas, a necessary tool, although often rejected by street artists. If we search for his sources of inspiration, we might think of the artists of the New York School, from Pollock's action painting to Sam Francis's post-painterly abstraction. He is also influenced by lyrical abstraction and artists such as Mathieu, Schneider or Hartung. Zokatos is an artist whose existence is conditioned by the artistic act of painting and for whom the canvas, the vital medium of expression, is an end in itself.
