Description
With Nuit blanche, Salamech transforms an emblematic support of the urban landscape into a true surface of expression. The metal shutter, usually associated with closed shops, becomes here the witness of a gesture directly inherited from graffiti culture.
The lines, done by hand, evoke the spontaneous writings that cover the walls of cities. Devoid of any literal meaning, these signs take on the word that reduces graffiti to simple "scribbles". Through their accumulation and saturation of space, they compose a purely visual language, where the gesture takes precedence over meaning.
The relief of the metal and the variations in surface give the work a presence that is both pictorial and sculptural. The light catches it differently depending on the viewpoint, revealing the materiality of the support and reinforcing its anchoring in the urban universe.
In the background, a subtle acrylic gradient oscillates from white to black, inspiring the title. Between light and darkness, appearance and erasure, Salamech composes a work where writing becomes matter. By diverting an ordinary element of the city, he questions our gaze on the traces that inhabit it and on the boundary, always moving, between vandalism and creation.
Presentation
Salamech is an artist, born in 1985 in France.
The artist draws inspiration from graffiti and urban culture therefore makes use of a city's energy to pass it on to his work. He has a sharp, off the wall and nostalgic look. Through protean practice, he experiments with several unusual mediums, such as torn posters, metal curtains, advertising display panels. He mixes texts, writings, popular and contemporary iconography to transform urban material into artistic work. Bordering words and materials, colors and superposition, Salamech's work is like poetry on a town but displayed on canvas.
