Description
A bold exploration of femininity. This 2024 acrylic painting captures a moment of profound intimacy. The female form rests in a state of total vulnerability. Warm ochre and golden tones define the skin. These hues contrast sharply against a deep blue backdrop. The composition feels immediate and raw. It challenges traditional perceptions of the gaze. The artist employs a fearless approach to the nude. Every curve is rendered with purposeful precision. The scene evokes a sense of quiet domesticity. It transforms a private space into a site of empowerment. The figure occupies the frame with confidence. There is a rhythmic flow to the lines. The drapery adds a tactile quality to the environment. This artwork rejects modesty in favor of truth. It examines the intersection of gender and identity. The gaze is internalized and serene. The piece reflects a commitment to feminist discourse. It strips away artifice to reveal the essence of the body. The play of light enhances the sculptural quality of the limbs. The scene concludes with the soft fold of a textured blanket.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
